Portfolio Company Announcement – our next investment in Estonia: DCR Technologies

We’re excited to welcome DCR Tech to the Nordic Science Investments portfolio.150 years after AC won the “war of AC/DC currents,” the world is inevitably shifting toward direct current – DC.

This transition is being ignited by the growth of solar, batteries, EVs, data centres, and industrial automation.

DCR Tech is building a critical layer to help accelerate this shift. Their power electronics and data platform enables existing AC-based systems to operate within today’s infrastructure while becoming ready for future DC grids, without replacing core hardware.

The result: lower energy losses from day one when DC devices are used, reduced future upgrade costs, and no need to define for the perfect momentum to modernize the system. DCR makes the transition more seamless by creating a practical path toward DC adoption and improving the unit economics of building new, localised micro-grids.

  • TalTech researcher-led spinout backed by grant-funded 10+ years of research and experimentation
  • Four patent-backed invention disclosures in combination with early industry validation, incl Schneider Electric

Why we invested:We believe DC is not a niche technical topic. It is a long-term trend that has started and it’s not yet dominant. We are at the moment when the structural building blocks of the next energy architecture are being created.

DCR addresses the growing need for greater efficiency and optimization in global energy infrastructure – enabling better long-term investment planning and capital efficiency.

The opportunity is that this transition cannot happen through wholesale replacement of existing assets. The winning technologies will be those that bridge the old and the new in a decentralised way, in sync with adoption pace that varies across the locations and energy consumers profiles.

DCR has what we look for at NSI: research-intensive innovation, defensible tech, a clear systems-level problem, and early signs of industrial market pull.

The team of the engineers and experienced founder – business lead having systematically being on the edge of the transition and upcoming standardisation, industrial partnerships building. DCR is still in its early days and team moving from prototype toward pilots, but the direction is clear:

  • DC will play a much bigger role in future grids
  • Retrofit-friendly enabling techn will become mission-critical
  • Deep and continuing university research partnership can become globally relevant infrastructure tech, created in Estonia

Proud to support Oleksandr Husev, Kristjan Lind, Bohdan Pakhaliuk, Oleksandr Matiushkin on the journey from breakthrough research to global deployment.

The next wave of energy infrastructure is being built and it’s increasingly DC.
